A better lie—if it had been a less experienced reporter than Kelly—might’ve been Romania. Why did Pompeo chose a preposterously over-the-top lie? If he were stupid, we’d shrug it off as incompetence. But he’s not stupid. This is what authoritarians do. And that’s concerning.
