This is likely my personal background speaking, but I disagree that the USSR actually wanted world revolution or worldwide leadership as a true endstate. … I look at the Winter Olympics and the World Cup, and I just see no functional difference in his desired outcomes from that of the USSR.
I understand the bit about “little functional difference” and in the end the USSR had long since abandoned its ideology in favor of promoting its national interests.
But the practical side is that I see little of Russia supporting revolutionary movements in Africa or South America, for example as the USSR did.
They are not into positioning themselves on a global scale, just a regional scale (well, a very large region at that, encompassing Eastern Europe, Central and Western Asia)
