No, it wasn’t. It was blown way out of proportion, and everything else he said in the interview was ignored, by right wing fundamentalists seeking to smear him.

He didn’t say anything wrong or outrageous, and the full context makes it exceedingly clear how deceptive and dishonest this line of attack really is.
