While I’m at it, another thing - I frequently compare the Confederacy with Nazi Germany. This tends to upset even people who are moderate, largely because being equated with Nazis is about as bad as it can get, and for good reason.

But read the secession declarations. Clearly, they felt they were the Master Race. Clearly, they felt that their fellow man was less human than they were. Clearly, they felt they had the right of life and death over other races for that reason. The main difference is that the Confederacy needed the labor of the slaves more than the Nazis needed the labor of the Jews, Roma, and others. The Nazis used that labor, of course, but German entered the Nazi era with more than enough German workers. They didn’t need to have a large population of slaves, because they had more people than jobs already.

Now, it’s possible that the Slave States might NOT have exterminated all the slaves if they suddenly found themselves with only work enough to keep the white people working. But they never faced that. Certainly, they would not have welcomed them staying there.
