re: #682 subsailor68

Morning all! If we thought the big three auto makers were in trouble, it’s just beginning:

Obama Auto Plan Links Auto Emissions and Mileage Standards

The sub-head of this article:

President Obama plans to propose the first-ever national emission limits for cars and trucks as well as average mileage requirements of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016 — all costing consumers an extra $1,300 per vehicle.

Basically, Obama is using California as the model, and we’ve all seen how effective California has been - economically.

The extra $1300 is basically a “tax” on all new automobiles. And we also know how effective raising taxes in a recession have proved to be.

This is madness. The fact is, people buy cars they WANT to buy. If the Obama administration’s goal is to make sure there’s nothing available but collision test rejects, the auto makers will be developing and producing products very few people will want to buy.

Example? Well, Toyota sells the Prius. However, they don’t make any money on those. The profits come from products like the Tacoma and the Tundra. Without the profits from the two trucks, would Toyota voluntarily continue to make the Prius? Doubt it.

Don’t worry, when they are forced to drop the Tacoma and Tundra lines, you’ll see prices for the Prius go up, and you’ll see less sales of the supposed Prius because of it.
