I hope she sticks to that plan, wood or not. I’ve seen several would-be female engineers her age give up their dreams once middle school social pressures hit. One of my sophomore girls many years ago abandoned her idea to enter the annual bridge building contest at the Speed School of Engineering (Louisville) when her BF told her “it would be too hard.”

Times have changed since the 1980s, though — I hope.

Her dream was being a teacher until a few months ago when she got a special invite to a science program at Tennessee Tech aimed at female students. She loved it and has been hooked ever since.
