Me to my 18yo tonight: “any plans this evening?”

Son: “I picked up a couple of vinyl albums for a friend who’s into that from Japan and I’m going over to his house to give them to him.”

Me: “what did you get?”

Son: “Yellow Magic Orchestra.”

Me: “Oh, Sakamoto Ryuichi? I have to admit that I know him better from Last Emperor.”

Son: “I didn’t know about that he acted, but I’ve been listening to his soundtrack and his piano pieces and he’s amazing.”

Then, after I gave him the sad news that Sakamoto Ryuichi has cancer, I turned him on to his relationship with the comedy duo DownTown. Some really funny stuff.

Of course, my son reminded me that YMO wasn’t just SR.
