Unfortunately, socons have been in bed with the Family Values Values Voters Heritage All-American Heartland for Flags and Truth and Zygotes too long to turn around and say gay marriage is okay. And they’ve become more involved than less so. The GOP mantra itself precludes gays from marrying. Individual people may be supportive, but the party itself and those it’s aligned with, say a resounding NO.

Absolutely. So the question is, is the Tea Party a Last Stand of the Values Voter Brigrade, or a redoubling in strength? If the former, this might burn out during the Obama Administration. If the latter, it could be a couple decades before they decide they need to recruit gay and gay friendly voting blocks. Of course, they’re still eschewing the Latino vote, so a couple decades could actually be ‘infinite decades’. (In the meantime, I’m with Space Jesus on it blowing over in the next 15-20 as a real legal issue anywhere in the country.)
