The main (counter-)point I was making throughout though is that not bowing to religious claims is not the same as infringing on one’s freedom of religion.

I’d pretty much agree, though I’d say that it shows that a certain amount of infringement upon pure religious liberty is necessary. If a religion holds an illegal drug as a holy sacrament, for example, they may be forbidden from using it, even though it’s central to their religious practice. It’s hard for me to see that as not infringing (perhaps justly) on freedom of religion.
