It took a well organized militia and a government-run army. Guns alone don’t to the trick. But do not tamper with the Myth: they see the revolution as being won by a bunch of minutemen hiding behind rocks and trees with their squirrel guns.
That worked up to a point but them the colonials were getting mowed down in actual battle formations because they lacked the military discipline of the trained redcoats and their German mercenaries. It took a Prussian general to teach them actual warfare.
