So I just watched the 1862 episode of “Civil War” and… McClellan needed a serious slapping. What a total waste of a West Point education.

No, not really. He was an excellent trainer and exquisite staff officer. He built the army that Meade would use to stop Lee in his tracks at Gettysburg but he could never have _used_ that Army the way Meade and, later, Grant did to bleed the Confederate Army dry.

He cared for his soldiers too much to be a combat leader and that’s why his time in command always turned out ill.
