Evolution Explained in Claymation: “Ape”

It’s not scientifically accurate, but it’s a cute and funny way to communicate a basic understanding of evolution. I felt a little sorry for the poor bird.

Human evolution explained in a cute two-minute-long claymation.

In case no-one has mentioned it yet, the President now has 42 votes in the Senate for the Iran deal, guaranteeing a resolution of disapproval won’t even get to his desk to veto. Great victory for diplomacy; this will make it much more difficult for any future GOP President to justify a war with Iran.

It’s pretty misleading in its quasi-Lamarckism. Those who don’t understand how evolution works won’t learn it here, rather they will be left with severe misconceptions.

Repeating myself here… but for all the hawks who want to bomb, bomb, bomb Iran, where are they ever queried on those talking head shows about why the rest of the world should care about our Iran fetish?

Most of the world doesn’t care about Iran.

The Saudis care about Iranian weaponry. The Israelis care about Iran weaponry. Now there is a case of strange bedfellows.

But most of the rest of the world would rather just trade with Iran for hydrocarbons. And that is what the world is going to do.

There needs to be a version with two trees, each with an ape. One gets zapped, the other doesn’t. Explain why there are still monkeys if we evolved from them.

I propose a big reason Dr. Ben is #2 among GOP voters right now is exactly because he is a religious fundamentalist who believes in creationism.

The very crude basics of selection can be explained in a couple of minutes. Several apes, etc.
And if it’s not possible, well, don’t do it at all rather than doing a misleading version.

And about rejecting reality, the problem for the upcoming COP in Paris is that it is still a show for aspirational diplomats to preen their feathers in public.

The Pacific Islanders and their allies are still pushing for an accord that will mitigate towards a 1.5C max surface temp rise over the pre-industrial era.

But we’ve blown past half way of that and the residual heating from previous emissions will carry the temp rise rise over 1.5C.

The real question before the world is if there will ever be fossil fuel that will absolutely be left in the ground voluntarily, or if we will allow extraction to continue (based on market demand.)

The nations which hold over 90% of all fossil fuel reserves have repeatedly shown they (we) will not voluntarily outlaw extraction of burnable carbon deposits.

The game being played internationally gets mirrored domestically. The performance of political theatre takes the stage; the physical reality of molecules and photons be damned.

California Climate Change Bills Face Tough Passage

The various proposals have prompted opposition from oil companies and others.

“This law will limit how often we can drive our own cars,” says a Western States Petroleum Association ad in opposition to De Leon’s bill to cut gas and diesel use. It warns of a future in which the state will monitor how far people drive, and fine them for using too much gas. Other ads warn of gasoline rationing.

De Leon, who like other lawmakers would not talk about the proposals on Tuesday while sensitive negotiations were taking place, has said his proposal would not ration gasoline or monitor people in their cars.

Americans love their automobiles.

Californians love their automobiles.

These kind of ads work.

A white guy named Michael couldn’t get his poem published. Then he became Yi-Fen Chou.

White poet used Chinese pen name to gain entry into Best American Poetry

Either the poem is good, or not. (It’s not.) It’s not this guy’s fault that some people think better of poems just because they assume they were written by a minority:

Alexie, who is Native American, admitted that he had been “more amenable to the poem because I thought the author was Chinese American”, saying that there are “many examples of white nepotism inside the literary community”, and that he was “also practising a form of nepotism. I am a brown-skinned poet who gave a better chance to another supposed brown-skinned poet because of our brownness.”

This also reminded me of the Sokal hoax.

A petition by HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society):

Ask the President to Take Bold Leadership for Syrian Refugees

Stories and photos documenting the unspeakably tragic plight of Syrian refugees have shocked the world this week.

We cannot stand by and watch the largest humanitarian crisis of our generation unfold. Our country and our Jewish community must step in with speed and diligence to provide protection and aid for Syrian refugees. With your help, we can ask the President to resettle 100,000 additional Syrian refugees into the United States, and to provide aid to the severely underfunded humanitarian efforts abroad.

Please sign and share our petition below, to raise the voice of American Jews in support of protections for Syrian refugees.

No, not really. He was an excellent trainer and exquisite staff officer. He built the army that Meade would use to stop Lee in his tracks at Gettysburg but he could never have _used_ that Army the way Meade and, later, Grant did to bleed the Confederate Army dry.

He cared for his soldiers too much to be a combat leader and that’s why his time in command always turned out ill.

Indeed. I’d also add that McClellan was simply too cautious to beat the commander he ended up facing, and some of that can also be traced back to his concern for his troops. Against a army commander as skillful and audacious as Robert Edward Lee, he needed to take risks with the lives of his men and that he was not really to do.

re: #102 The War TARDIS

Hey, I went to Chicago around that time with my family.

I liked Chicago, though not as much as NYC.

Did not like LA.

He means the first time some of Egypt’s King Tut artifacts were in Chicago, PLL. The exhibit you and I got to see a few years ago was a good deal smaller, just an echo of what DD and my parents got to see.

Wife and Daughter2 got to see it at the Cairo Museum. Ironically, I didn’t make it to Egypt because I was TDY from Tel Aviv to Savannah Illinois Army Depot.

Chicago is certainly a rougher, and tougher, city than NYC.

I’ve lived in both. NY is tougher on every level except possibly weather. Al Capone couldn’t make it in New York.

re: #73 William Lewis

No, not really. He was an excellent trainer and exquisite staff officer. He built the army that Meade would use to stop Lee in his tracks at Gettysburg but he could never have _used_ that Army the way Meade and, later, Grant did to bleed the Confederate Army dry.

He cared for his soldiers too much to be a combat leader and that’s why his time in command always turned out ill.

And West Point in that time was less of a military leadership school than the premiere civil engineering school in the nation. Getting assigned to the Corps of Engineers upon graduation was the great honor.

Charles, possible problem with Unicode: those strings of characters get longer with each edit.

Yes, it was Fabulous, and Huge!

I saw it in New Orleans in a special showing before it actually opened to the general public. The guy I as dating was friends with the someone on the museum board. Of course there were many other people there too, but it was an invitation only thing. I was very young and it made a huge impression on me. Just a spectacular exhibit.
