Being a Liberal should be no barrier to being a Republican - individual rights should be the cornerstone of Republican thinking.

I do agree that he was too economically left wing for the GOP - but social liberalism shouldn’t be a barrier as long as one signs on to small Govt. Thats how you make it a big tent national party again.

I’m willing to extend some room on social issues, and I’ve done so here. But, like you said, that still leaves Lincoln Chaffee out on economics. He’s a big government liberal, and those will never be welcome in the Republican Party.
