Listen to a native recorded SACD or a live DVD in DTS or Dolby, or iPod music stored in FLAC. MP3’s are fine for your little ear bud microphones.

Speaker technology is still improving, there’s so much great stuff out there nowadays.

I suppose, adjusted for inflation, I’d have to spend a couple of grand to equal what I paid for a mid-line system 20+ years ago, but in this day of cheap electronics it just doesn’t seem to make sense. I’ll just go with the herd, get some tight, brite sounds out of some little overdriven cutesy speakers, fill in the base with a subwoofer that can loosen nails and crack plaster, and leave this gaping hole between about 100 and 300hz, nice home theater system for about $500. Yeah the local emporia have the high-end stuff, starting around about $2500, but if I want accuracy I’ll just put on some $150 headphones.
