I think it makes a difference that the student depicted himself on the Cross.

At that age the student would naturally identify with the Jesus figure. I remember wanting to be like God’s son in Sunday School as a young child. I didn’t put myself on the cross but it is consistent with Christian iconagraphy and young people

If he drew himself hanging from a rope that is one thing but crucifixion isn’t a huge risk for 2nd graders.
