If hate comes from religion, then the religious must hate. If religious people don’t hate, then it doesn’t come from religion. But the other problem with what you wrote is that it’s overly burdened with negatives and asked for proof of a negative.

Basically I’m pushing back on the idea that homophobia comes from belief.

IMO, haters find other haters who accept, confirm, and amplify their hate. Like-minded souls not only make their thoughts okay, they encourage them to worse ones. It’s like AM Hate Radio, or wingnut blogs like RedState et al. They bring their hate with them.

It doesn’t come from the religion. The haters find a god who hates who they hate, who provides an excuse. They’re not neutral on homosexuality, then read Leviticus and say, “Gosh, that gay couple down the street seem like nice guys, but now that I’ve read this verse, I believe they deserve death.”
