I think you are greatly exaggerating the intent of his comment. I wouldn’t even call it a joke, as it wasn’t preplanned. However you want to label it, in this world, i.e., the US, most people have seemed to have gotten over this. If they’ve gotten over it, it couldn’t have been that disgusting.
