Wouldn’t that provide a recipe for any hostile lying witness to be believed though— just make up something that’s slightly less-damning, and then have people say “Well, he could have claimed something worse, therefore it must be true”?

Sorry, but what is Dondero lying about, then? Is he not telling the truth (that Paul wrote the newsletter) in order to make people believe that Paul did bear full responsibility for it?
