I grew up in the Industrial Midwest during the heyday of the White Working Man, and lots of those well-paid employees were full-on racists back then - without any trace of “economic anxiety” to fuel it…that has changed little.

That’s pretty much what I said. It wasn’t economic resentment. It was social resentment. It was hearing Spanish spoken where only English was spoken in their childhoods even though many of them would have had parents or grandparents that spoke heavily accented English or even not English all. It was hearing African-American activists say that unarmed people who get killed by cops aren’t thugs but human beings deserving of justice. It’s easy to buy the narrative that Trump rose due to economic anxiousness but it’s really a lie.
