I think the “normal” Spanish taught in American classrooms is the Mexican dialect. My gf’s family came from Spain many moons ago and many still speak Castillian Spanish. She told me that they used to look down their noses at most Spanish-speakers in California because they spoke a “trashy gutter dialect” that no education person would use in their mind.

My brother learned Castilian Spanish in high school in Texas. He worked at a Tex-Mex restaurant, and the illegal busboys and cooks said he sounded like a Bible.
