The party has true believers who will just follow along because they don’t evaluate “what just happened” in terms you or I would, because they don’t value consistency, and their version of “loyalty” operates more like an honor culture—different rules for those “in” than “out,” lots of covering bad behavior, and lots of nudge-nudge-wink-wink exceptions to rules—than a formal ethical code.

…and it has cynics who are loyal because loyalty is necessary to make the heist come off.

Earlier I made the comparison between certain Republicans and sports fans… it’s all about the team, we hate that guy until we trade for him (or he signs in free agency); we love this guy until he gets traded (or leaves in free agency). Being consistent is for suckers
