I think it would be a serious mistake for Obama to get too involved in race issues either way. The whole reason he was elected is because he’s not a Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton race obsessed black politician. I think that’s part of the strategy of the new racist right to force Obama into meddling in racial affairs. The best strategy is let the right wing activists target blacks and let them discredit themselves. Don’t get more involved that he has to.
As for affirmative action; I don’t like racial hiring quotas but now is probably not the time to rethink the practice. Let’s see how the new Republican white rights agenda proceeds before we make any decisions about our future.
