I was at the monument a few months ago. I am a fan.
Since the monument is new, there were hundreds of black folks there, touching the stone; having their pictures taken. I saw pride and tears.
Honestly? I felt like an interloper. I didn’t go within fifty yards of the statue. Wanted to give the folks there “space”. It is a strong monument and it’s a shame that on this side of it’s creation there is any controversy at all.
