My family’s been here in what’s now Texas since the 1700’s, back when it was still part of Mexico and the US was still a British colony.

I put “White Hispanic” on my census forms too, because that’s what I am. I’m not mestizo. I’m probably closer to a criollo than anything else. But ethnically/culturally, I’m definitely Latina. I don’t automatically “vote Latina” though. Some of the folks with Spanish last names are still made of abject fail politically, especially here in Texas.

Ah OK. My moms folks, which I mentioned before, where from Spain. Dads side basically made there way from Northern Italy but that was a long time ago. They’re mostly SA (Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina). But regarding voting Latino I guess it’s not a secret that there are, for example, plenty of Mexican-American Teabaggers.
