Yes, I’m fine with a gravel walkway. A cheap walkway that is a little more wasteful of my foot-pounds than an elastic mat is acceptable, partly because I can be confident that my energy loss per step is not likely to be jacked way up in the future, and that maintenence costs will remain near zero. Neither would be the case with a walkway designed to extract energy from pedestrians.
