I want to write a little from my heart.

People laughed at Jeremiah. He said again and again that terrible things would come. He said these things could be averted if only people changed their ways and turned back from the brink.

I am no Jeremiah. I am not a tenth or a thousandth of the man he was. And yet he failed. No matter how he begged people to listen, no matter how much he shouted or pleaded with people to just open their eyes, they did not.

What followed was horror. His lamentations describe depravities, rapine and privations in terms of horror that can only be properly read when sitting on the ground and weeping.

I am no Jeremiah. No scientist is. None of us are a thousandth the man he was. I take no solace realizing that he failed when he was so much greater.

I do not have the power of prophecy or a divine link like he did. But I do have the certainty of the science.

The earth will turn against us as if it were a living foe. We are facing a doom of fire and water, famine, drought and plague. It will be all around the world. There will be no place to go and no respite. People will go to bed at night wishing that the day had only been suffering as terrible as the day before that. Billions will die in a pandemic catastrophe of biblical proportions.

This is what the prophecy of numbers and data says. That is the reality of the changing climate.

Unlike Jeremiah, I am not alone. There are thousands of scientists shouting the warnings. One need only look at the naked mountaintops of Europe and flooded plains of Asia to see. One need only look at the shrunken glaciers and feel the ever more common and more intense storms. It is all there to see. It is screaming at us to be heard.

But people refuse to look as surely as they did in Jeremiah's day. And all of us scientist together are not a thousandth of the man he was.

And Jeremiah failed.

But in their heart of hearts, people understood that it was too late to turn from the yawning brink of destruction. Still others, hypnotized by the void, walked towards the precipice, heedless of what would ensue. And the darkest souls amongst them, believing that it was divine retribution for humanity's sins, secretly rejoiced in the idea that in this catastrophe, they alone would be survive....

That truly is the GOP, and China and Russia and those who run India and most of Europe. They are so convinced that they are masters of the Universe that they can not fathom that physics always wins. That will keep them fed until the army runs out of food.

It's Humanity, Ludwig, and for better or for worse, we're married to it.

In the meantime, here's something neither you nor any of the other Lizards have yet to see. If nothing else, it should get you through the night. As for the next and all those to come, I cannot say....

Apparently IL voters in the Dem primary have succeeded in nominating a pawn broker (not that there's anything wrong w/ that) for Lt. Gov. who has a very questionable past.

Let's see...in his divorce his wife accussed him of injectable steroid use and violence against family members. Then later he was arrested for assaulting his prostitute girlfriend w/ a knife.

However he managed to spend 3 million dollars in his race for Lt. Gov. (while not paying child support) and the enlightened Democrats in IL nominated him! So much for press examination of our candidates, here's a little mea culpa on that. [Link: thecapitolfaxblog.com...]

Over the last two weeks, President Obama has taken questions from unemployed workers in Ohio, students in Florida and a cancer survivor in New Hampshire. He took questions from YouTube users, Senate Democrats and even House Republicans. Almost everyone, it seems, but the White House press corps.

After a year in office, Mr. Obama has managed to do what every modern president may have wanted to do but never did: effectively shut out the reporters who work just a few feet from the Oval Office. He has not had a full-scale White House news conference in seven months, the longest such stretch by any president in a decade. And he has made a practice of not taking reporters’ questions at day-to-day events, as other presidents did.

Gov. Quinn's embattled running mate, Scott Lee Cohen, allegedly abused anabolic steroids, displayed fits of rage and forced himself sexually on his wife before their divorce, court documents reviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times show.

Cohen also allegedly skipped child-support payments at the same time he was investing his own money -- a total of more than $2 million -- in his successful bid to become the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor. His ex-wife, Debra York-Cohen, alleged just two months ago that he owed her nine months worth of back child support totaling $54,000 for their four children.

York-Cohen described life with the millionaire pawnbroker as "pretty unbearable" and said she lived "in constant fear of him," according to a May 2005 order of protection she filed in the divorce case.

"Over the past year, my husband has been taking injectable anabolic steroids. And as a result, he has an erratic, explosive temper," York-Cohen explained in seeking the protection order. She also said Cohen tried to force her to have sex with him.

A suspected suicide bomber on a motorcycle killed 12 Shiite Muslims on a crowded bus, hospital and police officials said.

Taiwan's military will buy up to 20 helicopters from a German manufacturer, it was confirmed today, days after Beijing lashed out at a multibillion-dollar US arms deal with the island.

China has yet to respond to news of the agreement, thought to be the first European sale to Taiwan's armed forces since the early 90s.

Taiwan's defence ministry spokesman Martin Yu said the island would buy EC-225 search-and-rescue helicopters. The $111m contract with Eurocopter, a subsidiary of EADS, is for three helicopters, with an option to buy up to 17 more.

The move could fray Sino-European ties, already under strain over trade and currency issues. Yesterday China filed a complaint to the World Trade Organisation over the EU's anti-dumping tariffs on shoes.

The arms deal could also affect Beijing's relations with Taipei, which have improved markedly since President Ma Ying-jeou took office on a platform of improving ties two years ago.

However, others believe that China could remain silent or issue only a muted response if it is satisfied that the helicopters are not for military tasks.

I once heard an urban legend that in certain parts of Russia, they use a cheap form of vodka on the roads as a de-icer. cheaper and easier to come by than any type of salt or sand. and of course we use to de ice the airplanes with hot water first then cover with a glychol mixture.

Police discovered the body of the girl, identified only as M.M., in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-meter-deep hole dug under a chicken pen outside her house in Kahta in the southeastern province of Adiyaman, the Turkish daily reported on its website.

The body was found in December, around 40 days after M.M. went missing. Police have arrested and charged the girl's father and grandfather over the murder. DOW has dipped below 10k ... it's probably understandable as the market has had a good year. But if the GOP were in power, this dip below 10k would be topic number 1 on this weekend's yakker shows. I hate to start an argument this early in the morning but damn, LVQ doesn't have a whole lot of faith in humanity or their ability to adapt and survive. Overwrought cries of "Gaia is going to kill us all" is part of the reason I'm incredibly skeptical of the "A" in AGW. physicists might want to put their math books down for awhile and pick up a history book.

I think Shapiro's might be the only real jewish deli around. They make all their bread and have a real nice selection of pastries. Indpls doesn't have a very large jewish contingent but the ones we do have know wtf they're doing.

Ivanov pled guilty Thursday to four counts of criminal possession of a weapon, in the first and second degrees, and four counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime.

In three weeks, on Feb 25., Kings County Supreme Court Justice Neil Jon Firetog is expected to sentence him to 18 years in prison for illegally possessing explosives, according to the plea deal with the Kings County District Attorney. Ivanov has already served over two years in prison, having been unable to make bail since his arrest.

So, how did this guy get caught? He accidentally shot himself and got treated at a local hospital where the questions were raised:

Then one day in January 2008, Ivanov accidentally shot himself with his 9mm handgun and sought medical attention at Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill. This led police to him and his apartment at Remsen and Hicks streets, and there they found eight pipe bombs, several handguns, bulletproof vests, a sniper rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and a crossbow, police said.

One of the bombs was even cleverly built into a small football, presumably to aid distance if thrown.

Yea we went to Bud's Buffet here in downtown Sacramento yesterday for lunch. It's like a HofBrau where they carve the meat right in front of you. The roast beef is amazing but the Pastrami... if I could get it intravenously I would... it's that good.

It's hovering at 10k. 10k is a psychological number and has no specific meaning. That we've lost a couple of percent off the market in the past week isn't good news, but could be part of a regular market correction after a pretty significant runup.

The big problem could be that the underlying fundamentals in the markets aren't as strong as we think they are - and instability with foreign governments worrying about defaults (particularly in several European countries). If they default, they can't pay their bills - and that might lead to further downgrades on bond ratings here and abroad. If the ratings are degraded in the US, the cost goes up significantly in interest - making the debt a whole lot more expensive.
