Once you get the garden going, an organic garden is simple and cheap to maintain. Composting, cover cropping, companion planting, soil amendment, the use of beneficial insects… techniques that are all pretty much free, and produce superior results.

There’s a very famous book, thoughtfully scanned by Google, called “Farmers of Forty Centuries”, that discusses the traditional farming and agricultural techniques of East Asia. It explains in great detail the methods used by these ingenious folk to practice continuous agriculture for centuries on the same land without working it to death. A lot of sound wisdom to their approaches, and it’s all natural.
