Steve Silberman’s book Neurotribes goes into the history of eugenics related to autism. People considered autism to be a mental illness and autistic people were treated accordingly with commitment to asylums, medical experiments, forced sterilization and basic torture. It’s a great book but the history part is sad and disgusting.

Fascists and other authoritarians first dehumanize and set people against each other. Once that takes hold, it’s very easy to rip a nation apart from the inside out.
