Because WW2 ended so badly. While many nazis slithered away to the middle east, Saudi Arabia, South America, etc, many were actively “recruited” by the intelligence services of France, Britain, USSR, and the USA. The competition was fierce. Massive recruitment of remnants of the Third Reich by our own CIA, State Department, universities, corporations, etc was, for better or worse, a strategy of the cold war. And it shows.

I wasn’t aware of that. I knew about Operation Paperclip and the scramble for Nazi S&T assets (ie von Braun and his rocket scientists) but I did not know that it extended to non-technical assets.
