From an HR perspective, career changes are difficult. Not impossible, but difficult. If you decide you want to change, it is typically better to go with a career not completely unrelated to your current one - say teaching Engineering or switching from Process Engineering into R&D. If you go whole hog and change it all up, get a professional resume writer to highlight the skills you have that will be applicable to your new career (ex. design skills, analytical ability, strong math acumen, etc.).

IF you can swing it, work with a consultant or coach to talk you through interviewing for new roles, what to say, how to present yourself, things like that. Think of it as staging a home to sell - only you are staging you!
