So long as you followed all the local laws, paid your taxes, and otherwise were a citizen in good standing, the fact that you hadn’t done a bunch of paperwork before or after arriving didn’t really matter. You were an American, you were welcomed, and you had a chance to prove your worth.
Well, some of those local laws also included ‘it’s okay to shoot a Chinaman’ and ‘Swedes get paid half the going rate’.
The ‘welcome’ for some immigrants has traditionally been a bit harsh and come with a pick and shovel attached.
