Well, I can say that I knew quite a few gays in the military, and some were close friends.

Some were jerks, but there were plenty of straight jerks also.

Many of the people who were, seemed to actually prefer the don’t ask don’t tell scenario. Their private life was private, their work was professional, and I got the impression they did not want any interference with their professionalism being subject to hyperbole.
