I bred percula clownfish and black-cap grammas for years, as well as propagating corals. I was never able to do much better than breaking even, however. It was just a good way to make my (expensive) hobby free for me.
My fish always ended up being super “friendly” too. It’s amazing what a little hand-fed food will do to take them from terrified of me to eager to see me.
I’m taking a little different approach. The market is fairly saturated with aquacultured clownfish and a few others. I plan on doing this experimentally and breeding difficult and rarer pelagic spawners. Also I will sell directly to the end owner, cutting out the wholesalers and (some) fish stores.
I expect it to be quite profitable. But of course that’s what every new business owner thinks. ;)
