re: #81 Targetpractice

I’ve heard that pointed out on more than one occasion, that as nasty as this election has gotten, it still doesn’t hold a candle to the 60’s in general and ‘68 in particular. People despairing over the fabric of our nation and worrying that this election will leave it permanently frayed need remember that we survived the assassination of a presidential candidate. The system has a way of righting itself, even if it involves a shitload of screaming and yelling along the way.

The assassination of both Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. in the very same year.

Kennedy’s assassination made about zero sense, as the only reason his assassin did it was to become famous. Dr. King’s assassination was the direct result of the Civil Rights Movement. The riots that followed were horrific.

At the same time, massive protests were occurring over the Vietnam War. Kent State’s massacre was only two years after that.

The folk that Mr. Trump has emboldened have always existed in our society, and as soon as Mr. Trump’s campaign is put away, they will go back into hiding.
