There is something to be said for Israel maintaining an ambiguous military doctrine and policy towards and with the US. It gives the Israelis flexibility to conduct military ops without being tied to the US (and the US gets distance and separation as well), but there are understandings between the 2 countries over assistance should Israel require (think of the US airlift of military equipment during the Yom Kippur War, and then during the 1st Gulf War).

Gee it would be nice if someone from Washington would say that…
