uhhh what? You’re confusing free with open source, dude. Open source means exactly what it says: the source code is open, free to view and alter. Meaning it’s not proprietary and hidden by a gatekeeper that owns the rights to the code. People will still of course charge for their services in maintaining and implementing a giant project that was made with open source technology.

Yeah, you’re right, but they do tend to be one and the same.
