Fifteen/twenty years ago, a monkey escaped from the San Francisco Zoo, taking her baby with her. They were spotted in a number of locations in the Sunset before she discovered Stern Grove, and decided it was a good baby-raising spot.
They were captured and returned to the zoo despite objections from a number of San Franciscans, myself included, who felt that a primate that had demonstrated that it can cross Nineteenth Avenue safely had pretty much earned the right to live independently in San Francisco if it so chose.
She is still a wild animal, and if she had harmed a citizen while trying to protect her baby, the city could, you know, get its pants sued off.
