Georgia has the HOPE scholarship. Any high school grad in the state who has a 3.0 average or better gets full tuition and a book allowance at state schools, and a smaller amount at Georgia private colleges. The problem is, there’s rampant grade inflation in the high schools, especially in urban and rural areas where the schools are not very good. So you’ve got thousands of underqualified kids chasing a finite number of slots. You have to keep that 3.0 in college to keep getting the scholarship. At UGA, less than a third of freshman keep HOPE as sophomores. So it’s almost impossible to get into UGA with less than a 4.0, yet you could probably transfer in a year or two later with no trouble at all.

These are great programs. Ours requires a taking a “core” college prep curriculum in H.S., GPA of 3.0 or better, and min 23 on ACT (24 for LSU). If the student chooses a private university or college in-state, the program pays an average of the state univ. tuition costs.

Actually, one year in-state tuition at LSU is less than what we pay for her H.S. tuition. It’s the on or off-campus living that would be expensive, and I just feel like when the kid goes to college, it’s time to be out of the house.
