Good morning. Here let me help with that.

I’ve been out in the morning all week in this glorious late summer weather splitting some maple for fire wood. Maple splits pretty easy if there are no knots and I’m feeling rhythmic and not spastic. Anyway, I got to the bottom of this one pile of logs and there are a couple of ash logs I scavenged from the guy across the street. He said they’d been in his backyard for a couple of years and since they didn’t appear to be dry rotted (they are heavy!), I hauled them over to my place.

So I go out this morning, and start in on the ash. Hit it once with my maul and it makes a dent about 1/8”. Wow. Hit it in the same place again. And again. And again. And again till I am out of breath and ready to throw the maul through the shed door. It’s like fucking concrete. So I get a nice sharp wedge and hit it with a 4 pound sledge to get it started. No luck. Not going in any further. Not like concrete. Like steel.

My forearms and shoulders hurt. Ash is amazing wood. I think it wins.
