Funny, I’m just now rereading “The Pillars of the Earth”, after watching the miniseries on Netflix Instant.
Example of technology that works: cathedrals. Tom Builder knows how to construct one, inside his head, and make it new and better and different (with pointy arches instead of round), and figure the number of workers, and the amount of time to completion of the building, inside his head.
All for the glory of God and man. And woman, and child, and dog.
Technology that works, courtesy of the horrible old Middle Ages.

How’s work going?
Work is going. In some strange way, I’m really into this new blue-collar phase of my life. I’ve done a little of so many things, this is like full circle, since the first job I had was at 14 as a bagger in a supermarket in Northern New Jersey (yes, they allow a 14 year old to work, at least in Jersey, in the 60’s).
And considering how fucked up the economy is right now, it’s nice to be working with people who are most effected by this economy. I learn a lot from them, and I gain a lot of respect that I may thought I have had in the past, but this makes it even more real.
And over all, since the occasional programming project from Kaiser puts a little extra in my pocket and the fact that I can still keep the brain cells clicking (programming for me is a mind fuck, almost euphoric in nature), that part helps my need for challenges.
And then, my current foray into jewelry making cover the artistic side of me, since I’m not actively doing any theatre work or working on any scripts. And the few bucks I make off on one from selling something through my online store, or one of the local shops here in the mountains that sell my stuff, that helps financially too.
Is it to much to say I’m comfortable, in ways money wouldn’t satisfy right now?

Aw shit…this isn’t something I wanted to read before I go to bed.
Administration halts prosecution of alleged USS Cole bomber
The Obama administration has shelved the planned prosecution of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the alleged coordinator of the Oct. 2000 suicide attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, according to a court filing.
The decision at least temporarily scuttles what was supposed to be the signature trial of a major al-Qaeda figure under a reformed system of military commissions. And it comes practically on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the attack, which killed 17 sailors and wounded dozens when a boat packed with explosives ripped a hole in the side of the warship in the port of Aden.
In a filing this week in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the Justice Department said that “no charges are either pending or contemplated with respect to al-Nashiri in the near future.”

No, its not too much to say. I feel much the same way about my new job. Selling over the phone has taken a lot of getting used to, but I’m actually better at it so far than I am at retail sales. I’m meeting quotas and my manager is satisfied with me. And that feels good, actually feeling like I’m gaining ground for once instead of falling behind.

Eighth suspect sought in alleged homegrown terror plotOTTAWA — There are now eight suspects in a massive police probe into an alleged terror plot to bomb the Parliament buildings, the Ottawa Citizen has learned.
An early Friday arrest had raised the number of people in an alleged Ottawa terror cell to seven.
But the Citizen has learned the team carrying out the investigation, known as Project Samossa, has now identified an eighth conspirator in the homegrown terrorist bomb plot against the country’s seat of government and coalition troops in Afghanistan.

New York terror trial likely to revolve around confidential informant
[Link: www.csmonitor.com…]
I have a major problem with the use of confidential informants. It seems that 1/2 the time it’s the informant that’s doing the dirty work and the pushing that gets the charges ramped up to a federal case. In this instance it seems the defense is going to have a few problems making that argument:
Attacks against the informant, who has yet to be identified, may be the only defense for the four men. On May 19, 2009, the government arrested James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams, and Laguerre Payen as they arrived outside a synagogue in the Bronx, allegedly with two improvised explosive devices (IED). According to the indictment, on May 6 the men had purchased the IEDs – which had been disabled by the FBI in advance – as well as a surface-to-air missile, also made inoperable by the FBI. As the men approached the synagogue, the FBI and New York Police Department rolled a tractor-trailer across the road to impede their escape.“In an instance where the defendant is literally caught red-handed, often the defense strategy is to suggest some form of entrapment,” says Robert Mintz, a former federal prosecutor who is now head of white-collar and government investigations in Newark, N.J., at McCarter & English, a law firm.
When you’re caught red-handed with the bombs outside the place you’ve been talking about blowing up….you’re kinda screwed.

When it’s all said and done, if we lived in Drum World I figure combined government expenditures would be 40-45% of GDP and the funding source for all that would be strongly progressive. “Statist” is an obviously provocative (and usually puerile) way to frame this, but really, it’s not all that far off the mark.

Man takes bullet to head, finds it five years later
HERNE, Germany (KFSN) — It took a man in Germany five years to realize he was walking around with a bullet lodged in his head.
Robert Chojecki, 35, is recovering from surgery to remove it.Police say he was hit by the stray 22-caliber bullet during a New Year’s Eve celebration.
Chojecki says he thought he had bumped his head or was hurt by a firecracker.
He says he began to get headaches a year ago, and only went to the doctor recently.
Since the bullet had not penetrated his skull, doctors say it was not life-threatening and that he could have gone a few more years without having it removed.

Geek thread!!!
Good morning. Here let me help with that.
I’ve been out in the morning all week in this glorious late summer weather splitting some maple for fire wood. Maple splits pretty easy if there are no knots and I’m feeling rhythmic and not spastic. Anyway, I got to the bottom of this one pile of logs and there are a couple of ash logs I scavenged from the guy across the street. He said they’d been in his backyard for a couple of years and since they didn’t appear to be dry rotted (they are heavy!), I hauled them over to my place.
So I go out this morning, and start in on the ash. Hit it once with my maul and it makes a dent about 1/8”. Wow. Hit it in the same place again. And again. And again. And again till I am out of breath and ready to throw the maul through the shed door. It’s like fucking concrete. So I get a nice sharp wedge and hit it with a 4 pound sledge to get it started. No luck. Not going in any further. Not like concrete. Like steel.
My forearms and shoulders hurt. Ash is amazing wood. I think it wins.

re: #84 Jeff In Ohio
Bandsaw, salmon, planks, grill.

Morning—That football effort might be OK, but I’d be talking to a pediatrician/orthopedist or two about ways it could go bad. Look for statistics pro and con, not opinions.
Got that covered three ways from Sunday. His pediatrician is all for it. His five kids go to school there. All three boys play/have played.

re: #78 reine.de.tout
Well, I’m very sympathetic to that, and very grateful that you’ve told your story, Reine. I do wish people would listen to it more.
But you’ve got to understand that anecdotal evidence— which is what you’re presenting— is generally not regarded as the final word on the subject. I know that you are also, in a way, an expert, having been a state employee, a long-time resident, and knowing a great deal about the city.
But that doesn’t mean that anyone who doesn’t immediately trust your version to be not only 100% accurate but 100% complete is suffering from “BDS”. Clearly, one of the biggest problems in people’s minds— I’m not saying this is a problem that actually had an effect, but was very visible— was that “Brownie” was clearly a patronage appointee with no actual experience or expertise. That the folks at FEMA in general managed just fine during the disaster without any guidance from the director is, I think, true. Red tape still did exist, of course— see [Link: www.usatoday.com…] which I was reminded me in terms of the Coast Guard inspection of ships helping out with the oil spill.
However, the disaster at Katrina did not end with the actual physical devastation. There was also, afterwards, the question of the evacuees long-term, and I did not, and still do not, feel that FEMA did a good job in handling that, or the federal government in general.
If you haven’t read it, here’s the Appleseed report on that subject. It is, I feel, quite fair, making the point that local governmental entities and non-profits will always be more effective than federal assistance, and that waiting for the feds is the wrong move. However, it has plenty of criticism for the federal role after the immediate disaster.
[Link: www.appleseeds.net…]
Finally, a lot of the general attacks I’ve seen against Nagin, etc., are unsubstantiated. I feel the overall number of them, and the obvious politics he and Blanco were playing, show their incompetence, but there are individual criticisms— like the Amtrak one— that can’t actually be verified. I assume you are not claiming that you, with your own eyes, saw Amtrak make the offer of the train, but that is one of the things you are saying occurred. So, in terms of you talking about the situation, you are not always clear about what elements you are saying you did actually witness and which elements you simply believe are true.
I hope this doesn’t just feed your anger.

Yes. Which is why I consider Nagin and Blanco incompetent, for flubbing the steps necessary to get the Feds involved.
Well, and for being generally unprepared too. But that was definitely one of their largest incompetencies, and even worse since some of it was clearly simply driven by control issues and parochial politics.

BTW..I hated it when my folks showed up for my games…HATED IT!
Honest to God the only Game i remember from 7th grade is when I got called in and didn’t know who to Guard.. I’m asking my guy and he just runs off the court without telling me who to guard…Thanks Coach.. I’m running backwards as fast as I can trying to figure what to do…I fell on my ass and looked up to see my dad shaking his head..The only play I can remember from 7th grade…My mom only saw me play one time in High School..I hated being nervous.. I forbad them coming to my games…That’s the truth
My clearest memory from basketball in the seventh grade was catching a ball in the face because I couldn’t get my arms up quickly because they were in casts because I broke both (and, my cocyx) when I fell off the top of the pyramid during cheerleading practice.

Because it was highly visible, Cliffster. I’m trying to explain to Reine why some people do have such a strong impression that the feds— and Bush— fucked up.
I don’t think that Brown had that large of an effect. However, he was head of FEMA, and he was highly visible— flailing— during the disaster. This gave the impression to a lot of people that he was actually screwing things up— which, again, I don’t believe was the case, and I’ve said as much to many people. And I’m saying it again now.
But, since he was plastered all over the news, and since Bush unwisely complimented him, it fixates a lot of people. It was a Dukakis-in-the-tank moment. It had no real significance, but it created an indelible impression.
I’m mentioning it in the context of helping Reine understand the perception of the event on a national level.
Is that the only thing I said that you object to?
You know, I really spend almost no time ‘bashing’ Bush. At all. I doubt you could find three examples of me doing so. Because Bush isn’t president anymore, and I don’t find it useful to heap criticism on him. So it’s a little weird that you’re treating me as though I have some compulsion to criticize him.

re: #113 Obdicut
By the time that FEMA actions might have kicked in, most of the damage was already done. A timely mandatory evacuation would have saved most of the lives that were lost. That was up to Blanco and Nagin; federal law and the constitution vest the power there and nowhere else.
Granting that “Brownie” was useless doesn’t get those two off the hook. They were useless at the crucial moment.

On one level I agree. On another tho, I think the particular threads that started with NO have been picked up by clowns like Beck and used by the right, so I’m not so ready to assign blame to one side of the aisle. It was used by the libs because the GOP was in office. The roles could easily be worse and we could be talking about ODS right now.
“Death panels!” = “Reports of doctors killing patients..”
“They’re coming for our guns!” = “Reports of police seizing fire arms”
“The government is not there to help us”/FEMA camps! = Well, everything that came out of the superdome.
Race war = The whole racial coverage.
So yeah the liberals used it for their advantage, now its being picked up by the other side. The media loves sensationalism more than it loves politics.

That was a little much, so I closed the the video and opened LGF, to read instead, as I finished eating.

If you look into Huntsman and Beck’s relationship (which evidently you don’t know shit about), you will find that Huntsman has spend many more years than Beck has been a large public figure, giving money, time and effort to cancer research and other such charities. Beck has know him for many, many years, and has been his friend.
Before Beck even had a national audience, he was praising Huntsman. They served on some charitable boards together long before Beck’s rise to prominence.
In short, this relationship with Huntsmans was created a long time ago and is not some recent incarnation designed to bolster Beck’s popularity.
But don’t let those facts get in the way of your preconceived fantasies.

But don’t act shocked when some of us think less of someone for accepting an award, or think the whole thing is a bit of a farce when he gives the award to his long time friend. Sure, recognize the guy for his great works, but don’t turn it into some sort of ‘award’. The whole thing just has delusions of grander to it.

Not so much a Beck fan. Honestly.
Don’t hate Lib’s either. Really.
Apologies then. Just seemed like your back was really up over this. Hard to get tone off the internet I guess.

Gotta run. Be nice to each other. Also, catch the pigs flying on video for me.

I hate Beck. But, I can start hating some liberals when they make knee-jerk comments and stop dealing with facts.

Jeeze, that’s an “I read all of them!” answer if I ever heard one. If you don’t know, just say it.
What I meant was… if Beck makes any money on this… expect to see others to hand out awards.
Things like… “The worst person in the world” awards.
Maybe Olbermann is the person who invented it.

From Beck:
In a speech Friday night, Beck said he feels like “God dropped a giant sandbag on my head. My role is to wake America up onto the backsliding of principles and values most importantly of God. We are a country of God.”
Right, he meant Judaism. Un huh.

That was the drift I got out of reading some of the PR about it.

No one accused the Mormon of being a Jew, but he’s not out to establish some sorta theocratic state from the darkest fears of Think Progress, either.

So you and Beck go back a long way too…why doesn’t that surprise me?
Hey, I know a hell of a lot about Hitler too, probably over all more than most people… makes me a Nazi I guess.
Boo.

Well, I don’t blame Obama for the fact he won the peace prize. I do think it was crass of him to accept it. Same thing with accepting this Glenn Beck award. Same with this not being about religion. Beck said it was about bringing America back to God, and based on the last 5 years of listening to him, I don’t think he means any sort of generic God-like figure, I’m fairly confident he means his God. So where’s my knee-jerking?

You’re right, others have given out awards in a tongue-in-check manner. I don’t think anyone actually thinks of Olbermann’s as a serious award. I didn’t get the impression that this was done with the same humor.

Funny story - my mother, a jewbilly of the first water, was invited to one of those enthusiastic churches by a lady she knew from work. Being obliging, she went. Well, some guy “fell out” during prayers and started rolling and speaking in tongues. She rushed over to him and tried to stabilize him while yelling for someone to call an ambulance.

Glenn Beck. Another pop culture hero or reality TV show masquerading as a religion and frequently dabbling in conspiracy theories, revisionist history, race baiting, outright distortions, and so on.

I was referencing Darthstar, who jumped all over Huntsman before knowing anything about him. I wasn’t referring to you. If you feel I was, then you may want to reconsider any of your statements above, sort of projecting a bit there.
Anyway, I wasn’t referring to you.

re: #113 Obdicut
Hey, Obdi - you make some good points.
Some of what I describe is what I actually observed.
Other parts of it - the Amtrak claim, for instance - I heard about before the storm, and again afterwards. And I’m basing my conclusions on my opinion that Nagin had every reason to distance himself from that incident (the offer was never made!); while Amtrak did not. Much of these sorts of things were a result of mass confusion in communications before, during and after the storm - and in the Frontline show I watched last night - there clearly is Nagin, the police chief, all sorts of officials, stating as TRUE, mere rumors they heard, and stoking the fires more with it. Massive incompetence at all levels of the city, beginning before the storm.
But there is a lot I did see, and had first-hand knowledge of; as well as conversations with people directly involved with the operations of various agencies including the gov’s office; frustrated employees, frustrated with the chaos that existed in that office.
388 | Obdicut Sat, Aug 28, 2010 10:17:12am |
re: #387 reine.de.tout
Amtrak did have a reason to say they made the offer, even if they didn’t, though.
But my point wasn’t to argue about whether that’s true or not— Nagin’s a jackass, so it’s kind of moot.
I’m glad you felt I made some good points. I know how frustrating it is to try to communicate to others something real— like when DF said that San Francisco was an “Unamerican city”, the impossibility of conveying to him just how American San Francisco is.
But I just don’t want you taking it personally when people don’t automatically believe the things you’re passing on second-hand, from conversations. I think if you make a clear distinction between what you saw and what you heard, it’d help people understand what happened and, hopefully, cut down on the amount that you feel attacked.
Thanks for taking the time to read it.

re: #222 cliffster
indeed. If you don’t like the long-term effect on the American consciousness, then I’d suggest you write a letter to all the democrats and all liberal journalists who collectively put forth their best effort to paint that picture. It was taking a bad situation and trying to make political capital out of it. Political opportunism at its worst. Disgusting.
What was really disgusting opportunism was the media showing trapped people trying to forage for abandoned supplies and branding them as “looters” and holding them up as what was really wrong with the situation. If every store in your neighborhood has been abandoned, with waist-deep floodwater forcing them to throw out all of their inventory when they get back anyways, it’s not like you can go purchase necessities to survive. But then to have you plastered all over FNC as some sort of hoodlum, as if you’re causing the problem, well that’s about as low as it gets.
