I’m probably not the first one to say this, but, unfortunately the “conservative” movement has been infected with craziness since its rise in the 50s-early 60s. Remember Joe McCarthy was one of the first rallying points of the early Right. The Republican Party was much better when it was based in the Northeast/Midwest. I don’t want to sound prejudiced, but the Southern takeover of the GOP has been close to disastrous. This country could have had a sane center-right party like most Western European countries, but this has not taken place. In this country, there doesn’t seem to be a sharp distinction between center-right and far-right.
