And no, you do not show your birth certificate to get a passport, etc. What is required is evidence that such birth allows you to be a US citizen. In nearly all cases, what one uses is a small notice, from the county of your birth, that certifies that such a record is to be found on that county’s books… and that little piece of paper used to have a raised seal from that county to verify its originality (these days some places might use other techniques than raised seals.) The actual original record is never submitted (in almost all cases.)

I’ve applied for several passports over the years, including btw an official (brown) one. In every case the mere fact that the county of my birth simply stated that a record of my birth was on file in the county sufficed. That is what is required, as there is no reasonable person who would believe that an entire false birth record would be created a priori, sometimes many years prior, to the need to have such information.
