From what I’ve read about Canada, those who were the founders of the Canadian Confederacy specifically wanted a monarch (then Queen Victoria), because they saw fatal flaws in the election of a president as laid out in the US Constitution. They saw the Office of President as a partisan office and the leader of one party, who would not be seen as a uniter of the whole populace. Half the country would always hate whoever held the office.

I guess they saw Trump coming 150 years ago.

There is a very good argument that Constitutional Monarchies are the best form of democracy, and presidential systems are unstable due to the likelihood of conflict between the legislative and executive branches (which the US sees often) which can result in government break down and dictatorship.
