When I live in Iran we’d sleep on the roofs in summer. Our house was in line with the base leg for Mehribad airport. The landing lights would just hang there, then shoot off to the left when the plane turn on to final.

In the 80’s there was a military house area in Hawaii on Oahu where those living there could see the tread on the tires of planes on final for Oahu International.
