NASA used to publish a periodic series of tech bulletins on an amazing array of spin-offs. Some were as simple as improved canes for the handicapped. Another I remember was a use of the physics of suspended chain to damp the oscillations of high poles and towers. The alternate fuel might well come from the aeronautics side of NASA.

Sometimes it takes thinkers not “in the industry” to make the big breakthroughs. They have a different perspective. I’d love to put those NASA people in a room and see what ideas come out of it.
