They did not make any effort to challenge or distance themselves from people shouting that very sort of hateful rhetoric at Tea party rallies, and now they are paying for it.

As they should. I think a lot of them are so brainwashed into hating Liberals, that they don’t want to do anything to destroy the alliance of fiscal conservatives and the Christianist lunatics. The fiscal Conservatives do seem to realize that the Christian extremists are bonkers though, so the alliance is bound to crumble.
