New York Times Pays Right Wing Activist for Access to Anti-Clinton Research

Anyone remember when journalism had ethics?
Media • Views: 42,423

In today’s story of grossly unethical journalistic practices, the New York Times announced yesterday that they made a deal with a disreputable Republican activist with a long history of errors and distortions to grant them access to his anti-Clinton research.

Speaking to anonymous sources, Politico’s Dylan Byers reported on Monday that the Washington Post had not entered into its own agreement with the author.

Byers also reported that the Times’ move to cut a deal with Schweizer “raised a few eyebrows in that paper’s newsroom.”

I’ll bet it did.

Fox News made a similar deal with Peter Schweizer, but it’s expected of them. It’s appalling to see one of the world’s foremost media organizations grubbing in the dirt right along with Fox. This isn’t about publishing negative stories about Hillary Clinton; that’s expected. It’s about a serious ethical problem.

Media Matters put together an article on Clinton Cash Author Peter Schweizer’s Long History of Errors, Retractions, and Questionable Sourcing. Check it out to see how grotesque this deal by the New York Times really is.

If the GOP presidential field continues to founder as it has so far, their only choice will be to put up a placeholder candidate and commence impeachment hearings on Hillary before she even gets elected…

I remember joking last month, when “Emailgazigate” first started up, that the GOP had decided to skip the election and move straight on to impeachment. I never imagined that they’d try to prove me right.

“…serious ethical problem.” Yes, indeed.

Esp since the first paragraph mentions ethically challenged candidate Rand Paul’s recommendation of Schweizer’s book.

“The book does not hit shelves until May 5, but already the Republican Rand Paul has called its findings “big news” that will “shock people” and make voters “question” the candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton.”

13 Kragar  Apr 20, 2015 10:59:52am

readers may want to consider some of Schweizer’s earlier journalism, including a 2008 work suggestively titled Makers and Takers, in which he claims to have proved the following assertions about red and blue Americans:

“Those who are “very liberal” are 3 times more likely than conservatives to throw things when they get angry.” (But conservatives may be 20 times more likely to pull out a gun and fire.)

“Conservatives are more likely than liberals to hug their children and ‘significantly more likely’ to display positive nurturing emotions.” (They’re also significantly more likely to insist on their right to beat their children.)

“Conservatives have a better work ethic and are much less likely to call in sick than their liberal counterparts.” (Except in the red states, where so many of them are receiving welfare.)

“Conservatives value truth more than liberals, and are less prone to cheating and lying.”

On that final point, I guess we’ll see…

14 Feline Fearless Leader  Apr 20, 2015 11:01:15am

Upchuck’s mistake was collecting crap and writing about a dead President rather than collecting crap on a potential candidate that would constitute a grift egg to be sold to the highest bidder.

This bit over at Politico still sticks out to me:

On Monday, a source with knowledge of the arrangements told the On Media blog that The Washington Post did not have an exclusive arrangment with Schweizer, and had turned down such an offer. The same source said that CBS’ “60 Minutes” and ABC News also turned down offers for similar exclusive access to portions of the book’s contents. Spokespeople from the Post, ‘60 Minutes’ and ABC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Just how strong is the whiff of bullshit that 60 Minutes passed it up?

I wouldn’t be too confident. If Hillary is the Democratic nominee, she could make one or two major mistakes that could cost her the election. Also, Hillary was involved in some controversial things that she doesn’t exactly like to talk about, and if they’re smart, her Republican challenger could use that to his advantage.

According to the Christian activist, GOP attempts to appeal to independent voters had been “disastrous for the Republican Party-and America.”

“Moderates flushed the legacy-and branding-of limited government, lower taxes, deregulation of business, and the attitude of ‘the-one-thing-that-government-can-do-for-me-is-leave-me-alone’ bequeathed to the Grand Old Party by President Reagan,” he wrote. “Moderates have sown the wind and reaped the whirlwind for Republicans, winning the presidency only 8 of the last 24 years.”

But first, they’ll have to prove they are batshit crazy in order to get the nomination.

And therein lies the same problem that finished Romney off in 2012.

He had to jump far to the right just to get the nomination, then once he had it, in an attempt to appeal to a wider range of voters, he started moving towards the center. However, in doing so, he effectively alienated the crazies, some of whom voted for third party candidates or did not vote rather than vote for Romney.

It’s quite the paradox: Anyone will HAVE to be far right to win the GOP nomination, but there’s no way in hell a far right candidate can win the general.

How do you reconcile that? The GOP needs to figure out how to deal with this now in the early stages of the game. However, I suspect it will take another November drubbing before they finally wake up.

MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) — The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), escorted by the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60), transited the Strait of Hormuz from its station in the Arabian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, April 19.

Theodore Roosevelt and Normandy have joined other U.S. forces conducting maritime security operations in the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, the Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb and the Southern Red Sea.

In recent days, the U.S. Navy has increased its presence in this area as a result of the current instability in Yemen.

The purpose of these operations is to ensure the vital shipping lanes in the region remain open and safe. The United States remains committed to its regional partners and to maintaining security in the maritime environment.

They don’t have any good choices really:
1) Nominate a “true” conservative and probably get completely trashed in an election. Though they will probably still get 35-40% of the vote.

2) Stay the course of nominating a “moderate” who alternately runs right and then left and hope to luck into winning an election by timing it just right.

3) Attempt to send their radicals back into the wilderness by triggering a schism and sticking to establishment candidates and re-initiating actual compromise-based politics and seriously trying to compete for moderate and minority votes (including supporting actual policies along these lines and not just the usual lip service.)

I suspect it will be #2 since that continues to hide the issue and eventually enough of the electorate might get tired of electing Democrats POTUS. (Or the Democrats put up a really bad candidate.)

#3 is probably what is necessary for the long term for the GOP. But that will involve lots of teeth gnashing, in-fighting, and probably 10+ years of being a electoral minority while they rebuild and try to make in-roads in territory that is now solidly Democratic. This is probably also what is best for the country in the long run since it would start to re-establish two parties that can and will cooperate to handle legislation.

Please proceed, RWNJs. I can’t wait to watch you turn the GOP primaries into another anti-gay, anti-modern progress shitshow.

Even a lot of Conservatives don’t want any part of this regressive bullshit. These bigoted clowns have failed to understand that there’s no longer a place for their hate in America. They should move to a more backward country.

NYT “pays” right wing activist?

I don’t see any mention of money changing hands.

The Washington Post explicitly denied that there is any financial aspect to the arrangement (cf. Politico), but I don’t see anything about whether or not that’s also true of the NYT.

The money would be less important than tainted content.

The GOP did not make any effort to challenge or distance themselves from people shouting that very sort of hateful rhetoric at Tea party rallies, and now they are paying for it.

Awarded to The Post and Courier, Charleston, SC, for “Till Death Do Us Part,” a riveting series that probed why South Carolina is among the deadliest states in the union for women and put the issue of what to do about it on the state’s agenda.

I read the series. The award is well-deserved.

As they should. I think a lot of them are so brainwashed into hating Liberals, that they don’t want to do anything to destroy the alliance of fiscal conservatives and the Christianist lunatics. The fiscal Conservatives do seem to realize that the Christian extremists are bonkers though, so the alliance is bound to crumble.

Also, the reporters said they had another opportunity.

“They turned in two weeks resignation and said that they had another opportunity,” Ellerbach said. “So we accepted their resignations and they left today.”

I saw Branstetter the other day on teh TV and she was adamant that the reporting on Bates was 100%, even though people didn’t want their names known.

I guess there’s just that much fear in that sheriff’s dept for telling it like it is.

FBI Seeks Source of Prostitution, Corruption Allegations Against Sen. Robert Menendez

Check it out - the stories are simply reports on the investigation, and the allegations that the “under-age prostitute” claims were planted by Cuban agents. Leonnig never mentions Chuckie by name at all, and says absolutely nothing about him being “duped.”

The ADA at court today looked like she just finished law school.

I figured she wouldn’t drop the charges against me because she’s building a “favor bank” with the Sheriff’s Dept and insurance for her career. This was district court, with a lot of bullshitting going on. They get rid of the “civilians” first and then bring in the people in the orange jumpers who can’t make small bails. It’s mostly just poor people.

Then they prosecute them and use them to do clean up on the county roads while they’re serving their sentence.
