An hour or so ago, I was doing some shopping with an elderly pal of mine who lives on my downtown Manhattan block and noticed that a couple of firefighters from the station across the street from where I live were hosing down the street.

“Whatcha doing?” I asked.

“Cleaning off the street for the ceremony tomorrow morning,” one of them replied.

And then it hit me.

How soon we forget, or at least I did.
