Suing for defamation is difficult. There’s a very high bar for proving damages, and California also has anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) statutes that can inflict heavy penalties for bringing suits that you don’t win.

Especially since you’d be considered a public figure, but I think UpChuck has the “reckless disregard for the truth” part down pat.
