TBH I think the First Lady/First Dude thing is an anachronism that should really go away, but if we’re going to have them, I guess they get to express their opinions however they see fit.

I don’t think so. 1st ladies usually do a good job at promoting some important social issues (education, health, etc). I think the position has been helpful and they’re going to be knocking around the White House anyways. Might as well put them to work.
